JMC 2033 is one of two classes that are required of students to take before any other JMC classes when pursuing a degree in the Gaylord College. Students have to pass JMC 2033 with a C or above before they can continue taking classes within Gaylord College.
Kathryn Jenson White teaches the course along with the assistance of her graduate teaching assistant Sarah Cavanah. They incorporate two lectures a week with a twice-weekly lab where students are able to learn firsthand how to write different kinds of news stories. The lecture portion of the course, which includes quizzes and tests, counts for 50 percent of the grade while the lab portion of the course counts for the other 50 percents. In passing the course, students will earn three credit hours.
JMC 2033 teaches students to become better writers as they learn to be objective, how to research news stories, and how to report accurate information. Students are required to keep a folder of their lab assignments and they have to post some of their assignments on a blog. This course is targeting all aspects of the mass media field and how to report in each one. Throughout the semester students will learn about investigative journalism, broadcast news writing, advertising, public relations, electronic media, and professional writing. Students will also learn about diversity in the media and how it affects society and journalism as a whole. This is a rigorous course that will make students work hard to earn their entrance into the Gaylord College.
