The OU class JMC 2033 meets in Gaylord Hall on Tuesdays and Thursday and is called Writing for Mass Media. The class provides lectures and lab assignments to improve student understanding of the media industry and ethics. As the title suggests, students also improve writing skills needed for mass media.
Kathryn Jenson White teaches the lectures. She brings over 25 years of experience to the classroom. A professional atmosphere is created by the strict rules and procedure she follows. Students are encouraged to take the class seriously and maintain a good attendance record. All assignments are expected to be turned in on time. The assignments are posted on the Desire to Learn website so students can understand the expectations every week.
The text required for this course includes Stovall’s “Writing for the Mass Media”, Arnold’s “Media Writer’s Handbook”, Padgett’s “New Directions in Diversity”, and the Associate Press style book. All of these texts are used as lessons or reference guides to improve style, grammar, and writing structure.
The writing done in lab puts the lecture and text lessons into practice. For example, the first few lab assignments include blog writing and a multicultural story, according to the course schedule. The lab accounts for 50 percent of the class grade and the quizzes and tests in lecture count for 50 percent. The lab classrooms provide each student with a computer and an experienced writing coach to improve their work.
The writing skills developed in the class help students in the newsroom, in broadcasting, public relations, advertising and professional writing.
