JMC 2033 Overview

JMC 2033 focuses on improving students writing in the Mass Media. Students practice writing for areas such as, advertising, public relations, broadcast news stories and the web. Media writing is meant to inform, persuade and entertain. At the conclusion of the course, participants will have improved their writing with practice, knowledge about different mass media, and a defined interest. This course is a must have to gain entry into the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communication.

Grammar and punctuation is the base of this course because writing begins with good grammar practices. All students must participate in a writing lab where they are taught grammar usage as they build strong language skills. Lecture and lab combine knowledge and practice. Students learn various writing techniques in lecture while lab turns the knowledge and skills gained into assignments and realistic deadlines. Students learn a variety of efficient writing techniques because language is the optimal communication tool. JMC 2033 informs students that writing is a process of gathering information, knowing the audience, organizing ideas, editing each assignment and practicing what they learn. A goal of this course is to improving the writing of the students as they learn about diverse techniques and styles.

While practicing to write for the various media conventions, students become aware of their media literacy. Students no longer purely consume media but they become critical readers and thinkers. Each diverse medium helps the students define their area of interest, which steers them towards a professional career within the media.
