Last night I spent two hours reading grammar books. Not kidding.
As I slaved over concepts like who vs. whom, I realized that life had not adequately prepared me for the grammar challenges I am to face in my chosen career.
My high school heavily emphasized writing, but only the writing of the academic essay. And despite grammar being an important aspect of that task, the structure and content of essays was viewed as far more important than the mechanics of it. After freshman year, my high school English teachers would only touch grammar if remedial comma lessons were absolutely necessary. Beyond that, as long as students' grammar was generally correct, it was acceptable.
Apparently, this is not the case in journalism. Intuition does not hold up when compared to the AP Style Guide.
