The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (http://www.glaad.org) is an important resource not only for gays and lesbians, advocates of fairness toward gays and lesbians, but for all media professions. The site accepts donations and uses the money to host events, entertain, and keep other media in check by acting as a watchdog to other broadcasts and publications. As the GLAAD slogan states, "words & images matter" and should it is important that all media is sensitive to what is said or posted. Media has a way of reflecting but also affecting the society and needs to be watched carefully for fairness. The check is necessary to ensure others do not display gays and lesbians in a defamatory way that propels the negativity.
GLAAD also provides links to other resources for media professionals, even two in Spanish. Inspiration stories of gays and lesbians fighting back against discrimination is posted in the "stories to watch" section, which is necessary to encourage readers to resist surrender to prejudice and not allow LGBT people to be shut out of the spotlight. GLAAD allows its readers to register and be active on the website and in events to encourage a grassroots approach. By being open to registering and social networking (facebook, digg, del.icio.us), GLAAD gets citizens involved in propelling the idea of sensitivity toward LGBT people.
