Native American Journalists Association

The Native American Journalists Association, or NAJA, is an organization devoted to improving the communications between Native Americans and all native peoples. They are based right here on our campus at the University of Oklahoma.

Their website offers links to Native American newspapers and other organizations, posts news releases relevant to Native Americans, has job postings, a brief history of the organization and a message from the current president, and special sections for students and professionals with links for jobs and internships and other relevant news. NAJA also holds a convention every year where they elect a new board of representatives, present various media awards, and hold workshops to teach people more about their heritage. This year's convention will be held in St. Paul, Minn. July 24, 2010.

This website and organization is of great importance to all people in the media industry, especially in an area of the country that takes so much pride in its Native American heritage and population. This website brings education to the masses about Native American journalism. This can be helpful to those who are not of Native-American descent to avoid using terms or language that could be offensive to these people. It also gives excellent opportunities to aspiring journalists who are of Native-American descent. This organization can also serve as an excellent resource to anyone writing a story about someone or something of Native-American heritage because the website lists all board members and employees and gives contact information.
