The National Association of Multicultural Media Executives, according to its website, “is the only organization of managers and executives of color working in both news and business operations, across all media-related fields, uniting diverse leaders across departments and across cultures.”
Its mission is comprised of 6 parts. Its first purpose: To increase diversity in the senior ranks of the media industry. An important goal, not only for minorities but for mass media as a whole, it allows varying points of view to be considered in production and takes into consideration the minority audience which isn’t always considered. NAMME also strives to serve as the leading resource for multicultural executive talent for the industry, provide executive development and management training, and mentoring to new and mid-level managers to members. These goals help to create new strong minority leaders through the mentoring and training by current successful leaders. As a producer of these new executive talents they provide opportunities for members to network and share experiences through meetings, newsletters, and technology.
However, one of their most important contributions is their creation of forums and alliances that join media companies and organizations to discuss critical multicultural issues and generate strategies and solutions. An important tool for those working in all areas of mass media these forums can serve as ways to address multicultural issues and further diversify areas of mass media, especially those lacking diversity in management. If multicultural issues are only brought to the attention of those effected, rather than all areas of mass media and especially those lacking diversity, there is no hope for correction the problem.
