Our definition of "minority" is changing. People of color are becoming a mighty force in the field of journalism, and this can be seen at unityjournalists.org, the web page for UNITY: Journalists of Color, Inc.
This website is a beacon for journalists of all races and nationalities. It shows how the ties that link us as people are stronger than anything that might pull us apart. This is an important lesson for every person involved in the field of mass media and everyone else as well.
The website states the goals of the UNITY foundation, the first of which is "To raise awareness and participation of the media industry in understanding the diverse cultures represented by the UNITY alliance members." Journalists of numerous races and backgrounds are contributors to the site, and their articles focus on the issue of diversity in the modern mass media environment. A mass media practitioner of any race could come to this site and learn something new, read a good article, or take a glimpse at the current and future state of their profession.
UNITY is striving to remove the barriers of prejudice that exist in the area of mass media. Their admirable cause gives me hope that they will succeed and have a profound impact on the world as we know it.
